If you were a teenager and in high school during the 80's in Jackson Heights/Woodside/Astoria Queens, I want to ask you this: Although I know there was the crack epidemic, and I remember dealers standing by payphones, I DID NOT ever see the following: kids snorting drugs off their desks, kids smoking weed out in the open on school grounds, kids as high as could be in class, school safety agents selling weed, teachers accepting drugs as bribes for good grades, my friends using drugs (I had a few friends in our late teens that admitted to trying weed and alcohol but I never did). I NEVER was offered drugs or alcohol by neighbors, my friends' moms and dads, my friends, my friends' friends, etc. I never knew anyone who died of an over dose. I didn't read or see on the news every day about drug use and abuse. Now, I know Jackson Heights had a HUGE drug problem, Roosevelt Ave was a mess. But one had to go there and look for it, it wasn't offered to you in your math class.
Now perhaps I was lucky, or my public school unique (I doubt it). I was a good kid, squeakly clean if you may. However I don't recall seeing that around me. The parties I went to were clean parties, we danced, we laughed, there were no drugs there.
I live in Staten Island now with the drug epidemic and the stuff that goes on here seems unreal. Perhaps, this was happening here then too, I don't know.... I wasn't here! I work in this field. My family personally knows 9 dead kids. So yeah, I'm upset and devastated. And I'm looking for insight as to why. Not lectures that it comes from home, yada yada. Cause these kids had good homes and were taught just say no.
If you were a teen in the 80s when I was and in those areas, what do you remember?
You were just blind and possibly sheltered or told one thing instead of the truth.
Perhaps, but all my friends from then didn't see it either.
