Hello to all the current urbanites from an ex-New Yorker (I sold out and moved to Texas right after college). My husband and I are visiting for a three-day weekend in June. I was dismayed to see no good concerts going on in Manhattan the Saturday night we're arriving, so I thought we'd do the dinner and lounge thing, crash early and then make a full day of it Sunday. Question is, would you stay in Manhattan and do the walkabout or head to Brooklyn? It seems the whole flea market/smorgasbord stuff is only open on the weekends. Would we be able to catch live rock music in Bklyn during the day or have to hang out there until nighttime? As for Manhattan, we wanted to do the Highline and South Street Seaport thing but maybe Monday is better for that. Are the Seaport and Battery Park areas even fully recovered after Sandy? I know from vast experience to steer clear of Central Park. Just want to get some good urban walking in. Any helpful tips would be appreciated.
Saturday night is a good time to see a Broadway show if you are interested in it.
I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge last weekend and from what I could see they are still working on the South Street Seaport. It is a nice walk back and fore over the Bridge Bridge and then on the Brooklyn side, walking along the Brooklyn Heights Promenade for a great view of Manhattan and strolling along Montague Street and if the weather is suitable eating at one of the outdoor tables of one of the restaurants there.
We did visit the Met the last time five years ago but I didn't think about the Ferry or walking the Brooklyn Bridge, I think he would love that...thank you both!
Check out Eataly for a meal or a snack at 5th Ave between 23rd & 24th. Gourmet Italian Food, Gift Baskets, Pastas, Sauces | Eataly Broadway might as well be 5th Ave at this point as it sort of makes a V right there. More than a dozen food venues in pretty much an unwalled area. It's hard to explain how it is done but they have markets and retail areas. It just works really well.
You could stroll uptown on B'way and pass thru or by Soho, Chinatown, Little Italy and NYU from the WTC to Eataly
A good place to walk, see sights and people watch is a walk up 6th ave... Say from 20th street up to 42nd. I love doing that in the summer.
