I'm new to the area and applying for an apartment that is part of a cooperative for the first time. The process started on May 13 and the move-in date of June 1 on the application has long passed now. The management company has approved me. The Board received my package May 30th. Now I'm waiting without a working move in date. Is this normal? Or is this a scam? No one can tell me when or even if the board will be meeting.

Help please. Any insight on what is happening would be great.

"Applying for an apartment that is part of a cooperative" sounds a bit vague. Are you buying or renting ?
If buying, the broker should be able to find out when the board will meet.If renting, the management company should be able to do the same.

Doubt it's a scam. How could you possibly have expected to move in on June 1 when you only submitted a board package on May 30 ? Might be a few more weeks.

Co op rentals are the worst. Sometimes can take 2-3 weeks or in one case 1.5 months.

It is for a rental. I submitted all my information on May 13. I didn't realize it would take so long for it to get to the board. Yah, when I learned the package wasn't sent to the board until May 30, I knew June 1 wasn't going to happen. I was hoping for a June 15 move in, but I have not heard anything from them other than, "No update. We can not pressure the Board." It just seems ridiculous that they aren't able to tell me when I can expect to move in. I'm already out of my apt and living out of a suitcase right now coach-surfing.

I was thinking of subletting a place in the meantime, but I have no idea how long the "meantime" would be. I already spent too much to give up and look for another apartment.

I've only ever lived in Co-ops, it takes a while. The board only meets once a month usually. Your package was probably submitted on May 30 because that's when they were meeting. You will probably get a July 1 move in.

What can I do about them not giving me any information about when I will be able to move in? Or when the board will be meeting?

Call the co-op's managing agent and inquire. They always know what's happening.

Co-ops can take a very long time processing sublets, easily a month or even two. I doubt it's a scam. More likely an owner who just didn't understand the process, or didn't bother telling you. I'm not sure what you mean by "no one" can tell you. Whom have you asked? Do you know the owner, or was this through a broker?

Try telephoning and say, politely but firmly, that this is leaving you hanging in a very difficult way. Tell them you understand that it may take a while, but you'd at least like to get a firm date. If you are talking to the actual owner, the owner may be able to persuade the Board to do a quickie informal meeting. It's not a matter of "pressuring" the Board. It's a courtesy that a lot of Boards may do.

So far the Board has had my package for two weeks, even tho I've started the process early May. However, lets look at the situation as tho it started in June...

TWO WEEKS IN...
MANAGEMENT AGENT: She is unable to tell me when the board will meet or plans to meet. The only response I have been given by her is, "We can't pressure the board to meet. There are no updates at the moment."
MY BROKER: He doesn't know why there is a delay or any information about the Board. The Mgmt Agent is telling him the same things she is telling me.
OWNER: She also doesn't know why it's taking so long or what the board plans to do. She has sent the Board a few emails, but has not received a response from them.

WEEK THREE... The MGMT AGENT really is tired of hearing from me by now. For the first time, she was able to give me a different response. She mentioned quickly that the board had actually meet last week but they don't know when they will interview me. This is after telling my broker Friday her usual two liner, "We can not pressure the board. There are no updates." There is no indication of when this interview will happen. I shared the update with the rest of the people involved -- my broker and the owner. This news was new to them. The Owner sent them another email.

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? I was half wanting to call the Manager of the Mgmt Agent after this last conversation. She is incredibly rude and not helpful.

You have probably been denied but they dont want to tell you for whatever reason (maybe its your race, maybe its your job/finances/age) i always tell people to stay away from Co Op Rentals.

Im sorry you're going through this
