Other than an expensive taxi, which of these options would be the quickest to Midtown: Newark Airport Express bus or taking the shuttle to Newark Penn Station and then train to New York Penn Station? We have done the former and it was really slow and disorganized. Has anyone here tried both options recently and can offer a comparison? TIA

The train from at Newark doesn't run regularly. Depending on what time you're there, it can run every hour, or not at all.
I took the bus last time and it was easier. I can't remember the outfit.
But this is the latest.

Express Bus Service

Newark Airport Express Bus

Newark Airport Express offers fast, easy, convenient express bus service between Newark Liberty International Airport and New York City.
Buses are only $16 one way or $28 round trip and arrive at each stop every 15 minutes during the day, 365 days a year (departures every 30 minutes before 6:45 AM and after 11:15 PM)!
When you board a Newark Airport Express Bus, you will get a relaxing, stress-free ride on a climate-controlled motor coach to or from Newark Liberty Airport.
On the trip to Newark Liberty Airport, customers may board a Newark Airport Express Coach at three nearby midtown Manhattan locations:
New York stops:

Grand Central Station (41st Street between Park and Lexington avenues)
Bryant Park (42nd Street and 5th Avenue)
Port Authority Bus Terminal (41st Street between 8th and 9th avenues)
At Newark Liberty Airport coaches may be boarded at:

Terminal A (Located on Level 1, outside at bus stop 5)
Terminal B (Located on Level 1, outside at bus stop 2)
Terminal C (Located on Level 1, outside at bus stop 5 & 6)

I believe you can take the PATH train from Newark Penn Station as a cheaper option compared to the NJ Transit train.

Thanks, I will check on that. I was under the impression that I had to buy a full-fare NJT EWR-Ny Penn Station ticket to avail myself of the temporary shuttle bus service from the airport. If I can do it with a Path ticket that will be great.

I took a train from EWR last year to PENN station and it actually was actually pretty easy... About $12 I think an it took about 20 mins during rush hour.
