This part of east New York is called spring creek and the part that you're going to has no type of civilization whatsoever. So your bus ride should be overall safe. Now if you transferring to a train station in the area then we would have a big issue.

I don't know the area, but I'm curious -- if there's no type of civilization there, then are all those stores that show up on the map as being right there (Marshalls, Bed Bath and Beyond, Best Buy, BJs, Target, etc.) empty?
I think he simply means there are no residences built around it. Spring Creek abuts the belt parkway. The stores are not empty as there are plenty of homes north of it and Starret City is a short distance away.

What type of people would I see taking the bus? Would they all be going to the mall as well?
Its a new bus route, it generally has local traveling but many people take that bus to the current mall.. but with the addition of almost 30 stores you will most likely have many more people taking the bus for work.
P.S. This route was created for the mall basically.

You'll have people shopping there from all different nabes along the belt pkwy from Mill Basin to Howard Beach. I shop there. I find it easier than going to Rego Park (by car).
They also built townhouses just north of the mall along Vandalia ave. and i'm pretty sure there is another big development going up in the other lots in the area. Looks like you have to walk along the belt parkway, if there at night just be alert it's only park/wetland on the south side of the belt so it might be a little desolate.

I was in Atlanta so I didn't get a chance to answer your post. Those stores you see on the map are all located at gateway center mall. The only residence who live by the mall are the new comers to the new community that was built behind it. Overall spring creek is a dead zone and despite that it's a bit more appealing to look at compared to the rest of east New York.
