Not EVERY single property in NY is going to be unrealistically expensive. There are cheap rentals available, as there is in every city. The question you have to ask is if it is worth living in those probably bad areas, or are you better off rooming with random people and splitting rent in a slightly nicer area? This latter option is the popular thing to do in many big cities were the cost of living is high.

If you want to live in NYC, then do it. Just do a little bit of planning and forethought and I'm sure you'll do fine.
