I am moving to NYC from California. Need advice for apartments in the range of $2,500 to $3,500 for 2 or 3 bedroom, preferably 2 bath, in a safe and quiet neighborhood. I will be working in lower Manhattan, so do not want a commute via train of more than 45 minutes. There are 3 in my family, including an adult daughter who will be in college.

We are used to living in the nicest and quietest neighborhood in our suburban city but know we can afford nothing at all like that anywhere near NYC. Any suggestions on neighborhoods? I've been researching Park Slope, Fort Greene, Bay Ridge, Kensington, Windsor, Williamsburg, etc, in Brooklyn. For Queens, Astoria, Sunnyside, Forest Hills (loved it), Rego Park, etc., but worry that the latter are too far away. Not sure about areas like Ridgewood and Crown Point. There seems to be much conflicting information about those two areas, but the rents seem very reasonable. We'd like someplace we are not afraid of walking home at night.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Upper East Side and Upper West Side are potential options with the 2br.

I would suggest forest hills.

Forest Hills is great (and you already love it) but if the 45 minute commute time is a deal-breaker, then it might be too long of a commute. I would estimate the commute time to be closer to 60 minutes from FH to downtown Manhattan.
