Ok I'm getting mixed regulations on this so I need some clarification. I want to buy a nice airsoft gun to take out of state once in a while and fire but I don't want any legal issues just for owning one in NYC. I'm over 18 and a veteran but apparently that's not enough for NYC to realize I won't go around robbing stores with a toy gun. I don't want to spend lot's of time and money just to get a gun permit for a toy. Anyone exactly what steps I need to take?

As long as it's got an orange tip I think you ought to be fine.

Somehow I don't think it's that easy. I don't think I've even seen a toy gun with an orange cap anymore. The one's I do see are completely orange now. Still I'm finding in some places that even a clear airsoft gun is illegal in NYC. Anyone in NYC own one and KNOW what needs to be done to own one legally?

From my understanding they are illegal to own or possess in NYC.

I read somewhere that if you have a gun permit, you can own one. That can't be right though. There has to be something simpler for using a toy. I guess no one here can speak from experience on the matter.

found this on line

NYC requires that all realistic toy or imitation firearms be made of clear or brightly colored plastics. Furthermore, New York City makes possession of any pistol or rifle or similar instrument in which the propelling force is a spring or air unlawful without a license. See New York City Administrative Code § 10-131(b) and New York City Administrative Code § 10-131(g)(1)(a

I guess you are not familiar with NYPD. They ain't too bright bruh. They will shoot you for having a toy gun even if it is brightly colored. Also there have been cases of people painting real guns with gun paint to make them look like toys. The laws are meant to avoid these situations...

So these laws exist because there are morons, criminals and violent people in NYC? Guess nowhere else has these kinds of people. What happened to a city using common sense? No. Big brother has to make sure you play nice. There should be something simple established like when you buy pepper spray. No expensive permit required. Just sign a form, show ID and move on. If you have a record then no airsoft for you. Is this so hard? Don't carry it visibly or use in the city. Is that to hard for people to understand? A cop sees it in the open, you get in serious trouble. Damn idiots.
