I am moving to NYC for my job and would like some advice on safe neighborhoods to live in. My office is in lower Manhattan. I am in my late 40's, am pretty quiet and keep to myself but I like to eat out, explore and a thriving neighborhood (restaurants, shopping, grocery store in walking distance).

Can someone give me some suggestions? I plan to rent a room because at this point the move is temporary (6 - 12 months).

You need to give your budget first, otherwise nobody can help you.

With a salary like that you shouldn't keep your rent so low as you will limit yourself extremely. Try for $2200 and studios-1br will easily be avail in areas that have what you're looking for. Quick example is there's a no fee studio off of the 168st express train station for $1450. Elevator/laundry building.

With your current budget you will get stuck in a roomate situation. If that's what you want then cool go for it.

Please clarify: did you mean one room as part of a shared apartment roommate situation, where each person has a private bedroom but shares the kitchen and bathroom(s)?

Or do you mean a one-room Studio Apartment ? Those are one jumbo room, holding your bed, a kitchenette, and door to your own bathroom. You are the only tenant at that address.

Just "renting a room" in a shared apartment usually costs much less than getting your own Studio Apt.

So, you want to share a 2-BR apt for around $3,000, and you'll pay half.

It sounds like the easiest way is to look for someone already in place with a lease, whose roommate is moving out. Try to finish off the departing roommate's one-year lease, especially good if the lease changes into "month-to-month" following the first year.

In Brooklyn, you could afford something nice in Western Brooklyn: Brooklyn Heights or Cobble Hill, for example. In Queens, Astoria might be enjoyable.

But I think you can afford something in a good Manhattan neighborhood because you're willing to share. Smart.
