Some Marble Hill buildings have apartments at that price point. Technically Manhattan, though located on the mainland in the Bronx.

That's a good suggestion, although I guess you have to be a bit careful about the conditions inside that place. I think parts can be dangerous (just from what I have read; have never been inside).
Also I imagine you have to prove you make 40x the rent. So if a LeFrak studio is $1120 (that's what it says on Craigslist) then you have to prove you make $44,800 per year. I don't know for a fact that Lefrak requires that, but most landlords do, so it's a good assumption.

You may be able to find a studio around that range in Astoria, as long as you're ok with it being a small, walk up studio. Safe and pretty convenient, as well.
