Technically, they did lower the fare one year during the holidays. I think it was back in 2005 when they offered half-price fares. Then there's a few times when they offered free rides before evacuating for a storm.

So disregarding a select few intervals, yes, that would be the best model to describe the fare. And of course, seeing that it is discontinuous, that must mean that there are certain points at which that function is nondifferentiable.

I just saw that today.

I don't understand people's fascination with having an exact total of rides ... when you're always having to Refill the damn card.... I understand it for Visitors and such that don't want to over pay and leave monies on the card... But for residences and daily users this obsession makes NO Sense.

the physical metrocard itself is a piece of crap. After a few rounds, its useless...meaning they crap out. So I favor the even amount before I toss it away.

You do know you can transfer your balance to a new card, you don't lose anything. I've done this at Token Booth agents millions of times.

yes you could.....but the most aggravating thing is when the card craps out prematurely & I have to send the damage card to Brooklyn. As a local NY, I always carry a backup card which I believe many here do the same.
