I have a car but I rarely use it. I hear there are trains to Philly, but do you think it'd make more sense to just drive there or take a train there? I'm thinking of staying for a few days to explore.

The fastest way is the drive on I95 but do it late at night when there is much less traffic or early morning on the weekends.

Amtrak. Very easy and stress free. Cheap too.

If you are going to EXPLORE Philly you will need a car so therefore you will want to drive.
Their transit system is primitive and besides, who wants to confront a learning curve for just a few days.

See the Museum of Art...it is world class. And the nearby new Barnes Collection is terrific. The Franklin Institute (again in the same area) is great for kids.
The Zoo is good for nice weather.
And Independence Hall, City Hall and the Liberty Bell if you like history.

Lots of old, old row homes in Center City that have been spiffed up beautifully.

It's a nice town for walking.

Have a "steak sandwich" anywhere.

We might rent a car and do the same thing...if it ever stops snowing.

Last time I went there, I drove. But then we parked the car in the garage and walked everywhere. But we are big walkers, so it's not a big deal to us.

Taking the train is pretty easy though.

If you don't need a car while in Philly (if you're staying in the city of Philly, not the suburbs surrounding it, you prob won't need a car for a couple days), I prefer taking megabus or bolt bus or similar. They pick you up from the west side of manhattan and drop you off in Philly. It's less expensive than amtrak.

Unless you're ok with the cost premium of Amtrak, I would second Mega/Bolt Bus. I used to take them back and forth between NYC and Philly all the time. Just listen to a couple of podcasts (or maybe take a nap) and the ride will be over before you know it.

If you're planning on just hanging out in Center City (or even University City), you shouldn't need a car to get around.

I would drive if you really want to explore. Just take 278 to the NJ/Pennsylvania Turnpike way after rush hour. It's only about 2 hours away.

Just take the bus. It's fast, convenient and cheap. If you book your ticket 1 week in advance you can get it for less than $10 one-way. Any bus from Chinatown is good

Do Megabus. They're nice buses. Easy to spot when you get on/off them in the city, and they're cheap and almost as fast as Amtrak. They have double-deckers so you can sit up top and have a view. But it's a strange perspective so you might get a bit uncomfortable if you get carsick easily.
