There are two hostels, The Local NYC and another called Q4 in Long Island City, Queens that around 40-50/night. The area is totally safe and close to Manhattan. I was thinking about renting one of our rooms this summer and checked the rates for our neighborhood on AirBnB but realized that I wouldn't be able to charge enough to make it worth it. Anyway, the area is Astoria, Queens. It's very safe, about 20 minutes into Manhattan, and there are a lot of really cheap rooms for rent, around $50-$60/night.

I think Long Island City in Queens (which is located just across the East River from Midtown Manhattan with 24/7 subway service) is your best option.
