Does anyone know what exactly is necessary to prove residence in an apartment when it applies to succession rights in a rent controlled apartment?
Everything I find online just mentions you must live with the current renter for 2-years, but how do you prove when you moved in? Is it as simple as changing your driver's license address and having utilities?
I am the grandchild living and caring for my grandparent.
Let's start at the beginning. Where have your filed your taxes from for the last two years? What has been the address on your drivers license (or non-driver's ID)? Where do you do your banking, and what is the address on the statements? Same with credit card bills. What about other bills? Are you the named party with and/or paying any of the utility bills (and have cancelled checks)? What is your voter registration address?
All this can be used. If your LL is really obstinate this could end up with the DHRC or in housing court.

Thank you DAS for the link and thank you BBMW for the information, I had changed all of those but I never thought to change my voting registration, thank you.
If push comes to shove, the LL will beat you over the head with any inconsistency.

Just change everything possible to your rent control address. I started doing that 4 years ago. My license, taxes, voter registration, paycheck, bank statements, credit cards, etc. are all my address. I also make it a point to greet other neighbors who I may one day need to sign affidavits saying they've seen me coming and going from the building for years. Always good to have extra proof.

Where are you? You can go to free legal services like Manhattan Legal Services, they have Attornies who specialize in housing. Get free legal advice before communicating with the landlord. I think if you can prove two years on paper, with stong evidence like your name on a Con Ed bill, letters from social secuirty or government agencies with the address on, cable bills with your name, that kind of thing I think you're in a good position. I believe being a family member also counts. You need to write to the landlord to request to have your name added to the lease, everything must be done in writing. Go to free legal advice, I think housing court have people you can talk to, also there's the homelessness prevention people NY have free legal advice
