We had 2 Associated Markets reasonably near us. One at 96th and Lex and the other at 101st and Second (one mile round trip...nice walk.) They had different prices and ads.
Anyways, about 2 months ago, the 101st St store changed its name to CHERRY VALLEY and it continues much the same pricing.
The 96th St. store became UNIVERSAL Food Markets and the ad and pricing is EXACTLY the same as the KEY FOOD on 92nd and Second. Decent prices, but not as low as the Cherry Valley.
Has your neighborhood ASSOCIATED also disassociated?
Morton Williams the parent company of Associated recently purchased the former Food Emporium on Madison Avenue and 88th, that store is now an Associated supermarket.
Only two Associated supermarkets one uses are still there; in the Village near NYU and on Second Avenue and 81st. However have to say over the past year or so have noticed the quality and quantity of some things lacking.
Meat and poultry section can be hit or miss, especially for chicken. They often have tons of the gross Perdue or Tyson "yellow" chicken but not so much organic, Kosher, and Healthy Harvest (or whatever it is called).
From what one has heard from various managers supermarkets in Manhattan below Harlem are being hurt hard. Fresh Direct is killing them and then came the expansion of Whole Foods and Fairway. That Fairway on East 87th is killing supermarkets from far north as about 96th Street to into the low 70's. There is a new Whole Foods on East 57th and soon to be another on Third and 87th. Even that relatively new C-Town on First in the 90's is feeling the pain.
A&P has been closing or trying to unload Food Emporium locations in Manhattan for years. They closed a really nice large one near Lincoln Center. Indeed the UWS seems to be losing supermarkets at a strong pace.

Another Whole Foods will soon open up on 125th and Lenox, so that will immediately have a big impact on grocery stores in Harlem.
A food Emperium closed at 86th and 2nd a couple of years ago.
