Dante Deblasio will be 18 in a few months.

Lets see if the Mayor allows his son to sign up for the force.

Yeah, didn't think so.

Hopefully the rough and ready attitude they come on with will be tempered by the reality that they can be ruined by one false move in the ghetto.

Who in their right mind would want to be a police officer in 2015 especially in a large city. People must have a death wish.. I have a lot of respect for the police, its a tough job and not worth for the pay they get. I would rather be a Private Investigator instead with a Criminal Justice degree or a drug and alcohol counselor you make more of a difference then locking up the same criminals every week and seeing them get out and then arresting them again.

What are you talking about, it's a cushy job. Your odds of getting injured let alone killed on the job are astronomically small

It doesn't matter. Black people need jobs. They are disproportionately unemployed at higher rates than others. So if I need to hire someone, and it is a job that I just need to show numbers for, I'm going with the black candidate even if the guy of another race is better qualified.

The Commanding Officer at our police district headquarters, who is black, was asked at a community meetng what he wanted. He said he wants "more officers, more cars" because he wants officers to build relationships in the communiy.

He said rapport with people is something a new recruit has or doesn't. Unlike other skills he teaches new officers, that one is hard to teach. But he can always tell when someone comes in with that ability. As he did at the start of his own career, he wants officers to talk more with people in stores etc., but currently they have to rush from one call to the next, so there's not enough time to build relationships with the public.

He'd even like to assign an officer to every block party, but at current staffing levels can't afford to. Encounters like that, he believes, would break down barriers between neighborhood and police, It made sense to me that building more trust could pave the way to reduce crime, since so much around here goes unreported.

My precinct is more than 90% black. So, OF COURSE, a black officer could do that job better and begin a non-threatening dialogue. He's more qualified than most (not all) white officers just to get the conversation started, and keep it going.

Hire away and send them here.

ETA: Elsewhere I read, a decade of Stop-and-Frisk put a police record on so many young black men that it rules out many otherwise good applicants from consideration. I don't know if that's true statistically, or just an excuse. Also don't know if it could be worked around in the hiring process if that's the only issue.

Interesting that you think being black makes one more qualified to speak to other black people. Maybe that's a sign that it is time those black people who can only speak to other blacks learn to integrate with other races...
