Hey all, so I posted a thread on here a while ago about moving to the city... anyway, I've taken a lot of your suggestions and decided to sublet outside of the city until I get settled. I found what seems like a great Airbnb option in the Woodside area of Queens. The apartment is located 3 blocks from the 61st Street Woodside station, and the R and M subway line is 5 blocks in the other direction (I believe the apartment is on 62nd Street.)

My question is... how safe is the area? I've done some research and read mixed messages. Of course, there are also tons of articles saying how unsafe NYC is, so I can't exactly trust everything I read. I'm not looking for the trendiest or hippest area, I have no problem walking or taking the train to do fun things. I just want something safe with reliable transportation (well, as reliable as possible) to Manhattan and other areas. I know a lot of it comes down to just being smart and aware of your surroundings, but I thought I'd ask to see what you think of the area. I've been to the city many times, but never to this area, so I'm unfamiliar with what it's like.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Woodside is fine. A little rough around the edges in parts, so to speak, but definitely not a dangerous area.

Thank you! That's what I needed to hear. I live in Fort Lauderdale now, and that's very much how it is here too... some areas are fine, and then there are some areas that you definitely don't want to go near.

Woodside doesn't have bad areas the way Fort Lauderdale does. Woodside is a hard working immigrant neighborhood. I'd say that it is the World's epicenter for diversity. Along with the surrounding neighborhoods, you'll have more ethnic food options than anywhere else in the World.

I've lived in Woodside for a good 8-9 years and it's perfectly fine. My neighbor used to terrorize me with stories about gangs and whatnot when I first moved in but I haven't had any incidents whatsoever and I get home pretty late at times. The biggest issue we've had are people who drink and sing (horribly, no talent whatsoever ) loudly as they walk home when I'm trying to sleep - and this is rare. I actually love the area.

It's not a bad neighborhood, just congested in some parts and pretty boring compared to nearby Astoria and Jackson Heights. But crime there is very low.

Thanks guys! Our stay will only be temporary, so I'm okay with it not being the most exciting... this will give us a chance to find an area that has more of what we are looking for without rushing into anything.
