We will be driving to NYC and staying a couple days and would like to know the most affordable option for parking. There are about 4 of us in the car, and since we are college aged....finding something cheaper is better than convenient.
We will be driving from the Philly area and first going to a wedding in New Rochelle, NY. So staying a night there in a hotel might allow us to park for the evening. Then we plan to spend the next 3 days in NYC (manhattan primarily) and would need to be able to park our car somewhere (we won't need access to it until we leave). Is there somewhere affordable in the city to park for 3-4 days? Should we park somewhere outside (like NJ)?
I've only been to NYC twice....and never drove there, so this is unfamiliar to me. Thanks.
Depending on the neighborhood in Manhattan, you may be able to find a parking spot on a side street that you will be able to leave the car for 3-4 days (depending on alternate side street parking schedule in that neighborhood).
If you wanted to drive to Brooklyn or Queens (especially further out into southern Brooklyn or central/Western Queens) you could for sure find a spot in a number of neighborhoods near a subway stop.
Alternatively you could park the car in a garage in Manhattan. Not sure how much that will cost you but you can check online.
If you are lucky enough to find a vacant parking space on some remote side street, don't be surprised if when you return, the car is broken into, "keyed," outright missing or there are multiple dents on the car's exterior.
I would park at a garage in Jersey City or Hoboken and take the PATH train to Manhattan. Much cheaper than a garage or a pay parking lot in Manhattan.

Thanks this is more along the lines of what I was thinking. What do you think about these places?
Again, you could certainly park on the street (for free) in a safe area in one of the outer boroughs (i.e., Brooklyn or Queens) and not have your care broken into or damaged for a few days - your car would very likely be just fine for a few days.
You can also leave the car in New Rochelle and take Metro North into Grand Central. It's quick, it's easy, and a good ride down. Check out the parking lot in the New Rochelle train station, and make sure to follow the signs exactly so you don't get towed. Some lots may not allow overnight parking. If the train station lot is full or permit-only, I'm sure there are other lots nearby.
If you're going to a wedding in New Rochelle, ask the locals for advice.
It is very quiet, safe, in a working family residential neighborhood with no alternate side of the street parking. Your car will be safe in this area for a few days.
Park your car and jump on the 5 Train down to the city from here.

Lots of alternate side of the street in Pelham Parkway and the area around the 5 train is tight for street parking, in general. 3 schools, multiple doctors offices, etc.

I do it everyday. It's not that bad. There is no alternate side of the street parking in the blue shaded area and I always find parking.
might as well do a parking garage and eat the money
