back in '80 was this a safe street to be on at night? for real estate was it considered desirable or not?
48th street in that area had street walkers into the 1990s. I imagine the '70s were nastier. Prostitutes, porno shops/theaters. Undesirable real estate I would think.
in the late 80s my dad worked at 327 W 43rd street roughly in the same location (betwen 8th and 9th). he always spoke of feeling uneasy on the street. do you think if he worked 5 blocks north on 48th he would have felt any safer?
when one walked west on 48th street from say Rockefeller Plz, where would they start to see street walkers, pimps, junkies, pushers? Im guessing by the TKTS place one wouldn't see them due to too many tourists and crowds
The whole area from 43rd up though the 50's between Eight and Ninth Avenues was a Hell hole before 1990.
One had to think twice about walking those block after dark.
over by the brown brick Firehouse at 48th and 8th, the old Blarney Stone across the street (now The Social Bar), the old Ramada Inn (now a Hilton Garden Inn), lots of hookers, addicts, pushers, muggers, or was it more "borderline" because it was 6 blocks up from 42nd street?
