South Jamaica is worse than Springfield Gardens but both areas have made dramatic improvements from what they used to be. Springfield Gardens was never that bad to begin with but it did have its fair share of problems back in the day...

This is accurate. Safety would only be a concern if your planning to move into 40 Projects (South Jamaica Houses) or the immediate blocks between 40 and Guy Brewer or around the Suphtin Blvd /South Rd vicinity as well as Baisley Projects but these areas have calmed down a great bit since the Crack Era. Springfield Gardens is definitely the better of the two with neighboring Laurelton and Brookville/Rosedale even better in terms of safety. During the summertime however try avoid the big backyard parties regardless of where you live in SE Queens as they tend to be a magnet for problems.

Springfield Gardens on the surface shouldn't be a bad area. It's supposed to be a lower middle class to middle class area but I think the housing bubble and the overall economic troubles might have hit that area some. I remember having a girlfriend from there a few years back and the vibe I got was that there were a lot of "bored" kids there. Not necessarily bad kids but they looked for trouble.

I'd take Springfield Gardens/Laurelton/Rosedale over South Jamaica any day. I used to work in SpG and once left my wallet on the passenger seat of my car. The wallet, and the car, were untouched when I returned.

Consider yourself lucky.

Don't know enough about SPG to comment but I'd still be cautious about South Jamaica. No it isn't AS BAD as it once use to be but that doesn't mean its good now. Its just "not AS bad".

I work in Springfield Gardens and it looks like the hood because of the junky looking stores but I don't feel unsafe.
