No offense but NYC without Manhattan would be pretty average. It would be of much lower importance in this country.

No Manhattan hmmm? What would then be the economic motivator to have all these people here? I don't think it would be the largest city anymore.

I guess you could argue Brooklyn would then by default become the economic heart of the city.

This is an interesting question to ponder once you start thinking of all the variables. Nice Thread!

Without Manhattan the 4 boroughs, and the metropolitan area in general would change dramatically as Manhattan IS the engine, however it is the boroughs that provide the GAS to run that engine..you cannot have one without the other. However I can tell you what is GREAT about the Bronx that does not exist in Manhattan: The Bronx Zoo (the best zoo in the country), the Botanical Gardens (best gardens in the country, world renowned as well), Pelham Bay Park (the largest park in all the boroughs), Yankee Stadium, The Bronx River (only freshwater river in the boroughs), Riverdale (largest cluster of residential estates and mansions by size of all the boroughs AND best elementary and secondary schools of all the boroughs outside Manhattan and the country for that matter), Fordham Shopping District (largest shopping district outside of Manhattan, and growing), Best Transportation network of all the boroughs outside of Manhattan (highways, bridges, public, etc), ....I am tired of typing..but you get the idea. It is the boroughs in fact that make Manhattan excel, and bring LIFE to it.

I dont know what you are responding to.

New York City without Manhattan would be...New York City without Manhattan! (As a native born Brooklynite, this is not a problem for me).

Brooklyn would be the 4th largest city if it were independent. Add Wall St. and a major sports team and you still have the best city in the U.S. Sorry Chicago.

^^ or Brooklyn and Queens would be the 3rd and 4th largest respectively if the boroughs never consolidated but remained separate cities--even if Manhattan still existed.

Lets not forget that the economic motivator for the population of this city is Manhattan. Take away Manhattan and the outer boroughs would probably be nowhere near as populated.

Brooklyn was the third largest city in the country before it became part of NYC.

It was quite populous without being associated with Manhattan.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. But look at it this way: where would Manhattan be without the other four boroughs?
