Yeah, just 3 years ago I found plenty in the $850 range.

But in the Bronx I noticed it's not necessarily cheaper to live in the areas considered to be more ghetto.

So you have to pay high rent and be in a unsafe area? Crazy.

Yes. A 1BR in pretty much any NYC ghetto, except for maybe parts of Staten Island, will be at least $1000 per month usually.

So it sounds like not many people are living alone in NYC who are members of the working poor

I'm not sure to be honest, but I think a single person would need to make at least 30k a year (or something like that) to afford the cheapest apartments out there going by the 40X rule.

As long as immigrants keep pouring into NYC, there will always be an affordable housing shortage. Someone please tell that to our illustrious mayor. His so-called affordable housing program (which actually destroys affordable housing in East New York) is in the grand scheme of things, meaningless.

The immigrants already have most of the Low Income Housing, and affordable housing is not really affordable.

Still amazed that people get suckered into coming to NYC. At my job, we have a pretty high turn-over rate because the pay doesn't reflect the work expected so people leave. Most of the new hires are all from out state just moved in recently attracted to the NYC pay but don't know the expectations and cost of living yet or hasn't hit them yet. The past 2 years, we've had atleast 1/2 dozen turn overs and a few of them were in NYC for less than 2 years all got burnt out or just got pissed off by management.

Which is why many people go to Glassdoor dotcom to voice their opinions. But there is still tons of people coming regardless how expensive it is to live here and they will find out the pay doesn't add up soon.
