^ I live near the 86th one. I go in there once in a while. For fast food, it's not bad. Certainly better than McDonalds. But too expensive for what it is.
Now THIS is devastating. I have been frequenting Jackson Hole for since the mid 90's. I used to go to the one on 84th & 2nd before it shut down. Then I started going to the 85th and Columbus location and found that one better. The vibe, neighborhood and the food all made me love it. In fact I was just trying to decide when I was gonna go there again. Hopefully the location on 64th and 2nd is still open
The Jackson Hole burger is a burger that was the burger du jour in the 1970s & 1980s. A large 3/4 lb patty cooked under a metal cup to hold in the moisture and retain the beef flavor. This burger was resource intensive for the operator since meat is the most expensive ingredient in a restaurant and these patties required a lot a meat. In addition to the quantity this burger required high quality beef for the taste to be just right. When this burger is prepared properly it has the flavor of a Peter Luger porterhouse.
Restaurant operators realize that a Jackson Hole burger is tough to pull off. Requires high quality ingredients and a cook that knows what he is doing. The burger fashion today is for a slim fast food style patty on a toasted bun. Cheap to make and the public of today likes to consume the things that are cheap. The style of burger in fashion today is a style perfected by in-n-out in California. A slim patty, toasted bun stack the tomatoes and onions since those are cheap. Shake Shack has successfully copied the in-n-out style. Jackson Hole is diametrically opposed to the burger currently in vogue. This is why it is closing locations.
Wow, I tried to go there last year and they werten't accepting credit cards! We ended up going somewhere else, but I always wanted to go back to try it. Out of the fast food burgers, I can't really say I cared for shake shack (unless we're talking about the mushroom burger-that's yummy). The winner for me is smash burger! It's a little pricey, but definitely worth it compared to other fast food. The only other that comes close is 5 Guys.

In-n-out is old, they've been around since what like the 50, 60's? It's just a different style of burger. A good burger is a good burger no matter the style.
The trend for the last 10 years is to facsimile In-N-Out. 5 Guys, Shake Shack, Smash Burger are all copies of in-n-out, nothing original there. In-n-out operated isolated on the west coast as a family owned business for 50 years – ultra successful with no ambition to crack the Northeast market. Yes, In-N-Out is better than good, it is the best American style buger fast food chain.
Young Americans want California fast food, not the Greek diner burgers of Jackson Hole.

I'm a fan of both In-n-out and 5 guys and I don't find them alike honestly. 5 guys burgers are bigger and they have a lot of different topping options. In-n-out fries are potato chips they are a joke but 5 guys makes great fries. Overall when it comes to fast food I'm pretty fond of 5 guys although to be honest they are spotty now because of over expansion. Shake Shack is good and yes I do think they kinda ripped off In-n-out a tad, their food is very very salty though (Shake Shack).
Not everyone that goes to Shake Shack gets a shake but everyone gets loads of salt. Should change the name to Salt Shack. Can't even make a fist after eating there.
