The suburbs of NYC don't have a subway, either. Trust me, I grew up in one of them, and I was always 2 miles away from any shops. I love living in NYC now and being literally a block or two away from everything I need.

However, every other US city I've visited (Portland, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia) has pretty much had that same perk. You really don't need a car in most cities, thankfully.

I was originally Eastern PA so I went to Philly often.
I needed a car for everything.

Getting around Philly without a car is doable but it's not to the degree of NYC. For getting around at off times you definitely need to compensate with a personal car or cabs.
