Hello everyone,

My wife and I, are in a situation where we need to move from our current apartment in western Queens by October.
We want to rent for 1 yr and then buy something or move out of NY.
so my main question is, what's the cheapest safe neighborhood to rent for 1 yr?

my work is close to the Barclay's center in Brooklyn. I'll be the only commuting, and I'm OK scarifying travel time for safety in the neighborhood.

We have two kids (4 yr old & 7 month old) and we're looking for a 2br paying up to $1,900.

What are some the neighborhoods you guys would recommend I look into?

We're open to Queens, Brooklyn, SI, and even Jersey (wife is irrationally, imo, and vehemently against moving to the Bronx).

Here's what I think could work given our constrains.

*Queens*

-Maspeth
-Ridgewood (any areas to avoid in this neighborhood?)
-Glendale
-Woodside

*Brooklyn*

-Bay Ridge
-Bensonhurst
-Sheepshead bay
-Brighton beach

*SI*

I'm not familiar with any areas of this borough so pointers would be appreciated.
Again, main requirements are;

- up to 1 1/2 hrs travel time using public transportation to the Barclays center
- Safe neighborhood
- Average price for a 2 br up to $1,900

*New Jersey*

Same as SI, I don't know much about the good or bad areas and prices. Help here is highly appreciated.

Thank you everyone for reading and your help!

Riverdale is about 1700/1800 for a two bedroom and is safer than some of the neighborhoods you listed above.

Sunset Park seems like a good option

Bensonhurst/Gravesend along the D or N lines (note the current construction issues on the N line) would get you a safe area, likely a bit below budget and an easy commute to that area

Some of those southern Brooklyn neighborhoods mentioned seem to be your best bet as long as you're close enough to the D or N.

Why not Midwood or Kensington? Closer to downtown Brooklyn.

I don't think you can still get a 2BR in Kensington for that price

Definitely southern Brooklyn best bet, along the lines that stop at Atlantic avenue. Not sure if 2 bedroom for $1900 is possible near the train. May have to take bus to the train.

Thanks for the all the helpful replies.

any thoughts on 'Kew Garden hills"?

prices there seem to be reasonable, fairly safe, decent schools but the drawback is the lack of trains.
