Apropos of Bugsy's post about ice cream thieves...

I've been wistfully wishing for ice cream, but there's no way I could get it home in this heat without it becoming a puddle. But the article mentions the health problem of melted ice cream as well. Which interests me because Manhattan supermarkets use vertical freezers with doors - but whenever ice cream is on sale, so the doors are being opened a bit more frequently, the ice-cream is always half-melted. If you squeeze the carton, you can feel how soft it is.

So why doesn't the health department do something about it?

No danger if it's slightly melted, But you can ask a manager to get you a fresh one from the back as it's a legitimate concern. Also there are times supermarkets restock and if the manager route fails there could be a way to find out when things are restocked and get a fresher one that way. I used to work in a supermarket many years ago and recall a day that was heavy on packing out. Maybe a CD'r who has more knoweldge can post something here.

All else fails-Go to an ice cream shoppe directly for your fix.

The world can be a tough place-Ice cream makes things a bit better. Do not let man or beast stand between you and cold, sweet dessert. Armies and empires must fall before you get denied ice cream. Never give up!

Mother taught me ages ago when shopping go for the stuff at the back of shelf. Do this especially for dairy and or frozen/refrigerated goods. If they are stacked simply dig down......

For other groceries you want to watch doing this, especially for breads and or anything made from grains or cereals. Darn rodent infested shops..... You pick up a box of cookies or corn flakes, get them to the checkout counter then notice bite marks on the packet.....
