Wow this thread is old...not sure if the OP would see this. The OP graduated just in time for the hiring freezes to be implemented in NYC.
@ ATX: According to some forums here (check the Education forum), there's a hiring freeze in NYC that doesn't look like will recede any time soon. Unless you teach a high need area (it changes so check the schools.nyc site), you are likely to face stiff competition for the few spots that are open (only "new schools" may hire teachers who are not already "in the system").
