Here's how it looks to me. This loser convict from Florida moves to NYC and finds this gay jeweler to be his sugar daddy. I think someone else referred to it as 'gay for pay.' Seems about right, you can look at this guy and realize he doesn't have a moral bone in his body.
Him and his buddy - who looks straight - are out at a nightclub, meet some chicks, and bring them back. Three girls, and the now deceased - so far, nothing to alarming. Don't know if they had intentions of robbing the kid or what, but the chicks left, deceased walked them out or left for a bit, and then came back for some reason. At that point, I'd guess it was a robbery gone bad, but who knows.

I'm not sure I'm following every detail, but maybe the killer (surrogate son) has been pretending to be gay all this time, and the victim threatened to expose him as straight to the gay sugar daddy, which would have therefore cut off all the killer's income.
It seems the killer is highly motivated by money, and likes to have a lot of it, so if he felt that his entire income stream was going to be cut off, then maybe he would have been motivated enough to kill.

There is and hasn't been for some time any shortage of so called "straight" young men who are "gay for pay" as it were. Since both the jeweler and his "son" deny there is anything sexual going on (few then or now believe them, including residents of said apartment building), what would there be to "threaten to expose"? Unless there *was* something going on and someone was going to blow the lid. Though quite honestly don't think few today would really care.
No, *something* happened in that apartment which sparked major violence. You don't stab someone at least fifteen times, then (possibly) throw him or the body out of a window over nothing.
It is also interesting that the indictment against James Rackover was returned but remains sealed.

Hypothetically if the jeweler has been having sex with the "surrogate son" for a year or two, would he even care if the guy was pretending to be gay? As far as I'm concerned, he's gay (or at least bisexual) if he's been having sex with the jeweler whether for money or not. Sexuality is so fundamental to a person's identity it is not something that you would do solely for money.
I presume a good looking young guy could probably find a "sugar mommy" especially in Manhattan. No straight guy would hook up with an older gay man for money.
Maybe Comunale wanted sex with one of them( Dilone ) but didn't want to have a three way with the psycho looking jeweler's "son" who then became enraged. Could also have been a blow up about who was going to be the "top" and who was going to be the "bottom." My guess is that Rackover wanted to **** Communale but Comunale didn't want to get ****ed by Rackover.
Anyway, all three of them are/were gay and there were drugs involved.

Nobody pretends to be gay but there is no shortage of gay people who pretend or claim to be straight.

There have been "straight" men who have prostituted themselves to gay men (or at least a man wanting sex) going back centuries.
Yes there are and have been gigolos; first don't see how sleeping with some old grandmother for money is any less gross than doing it with a man, and second historically men had both power and money.
You'd be surprised at how many gay porn actors/models call or consider themselves "straight". A good number of them from places like Eastern Europe have wives/girlfriends and perhaps even children.
Knew plenty of guys back in the day who were "go-go" boys at various gay discos/clubs, and a good number were straight. In fact one promoter would tell them to keep their girlfriends away because it spoiled the "fantasy". That is gay guys putting money down some young blood's jock want to believe they have a shot, that dream is instantly killed when you see said guy being affectionate with his gf.
In fact in this modern era of "equality" or whatever fewer guys (and females for that matter) see anything wrong with prossing. There was an article in the NYT or some media a few years back about the growing number of young college students and or twenty-somethings working as "escorts". Simply put they need money for everything from paying off student loans to living on low or in some cases no wages. And yes, plenty of young guys had no problems hooking up with some old guy for bucks.
