You figure with some of the capital that's flowed from Manhattan to Brooklyn and how far some travel for work that this would be an obvious short term fix.
1. Building a new subway certainly isn't a short term fix
2. Do Staten Island residents even want a subway connection?
Who cares what SI residents want?
I think that the problem is that even though an SI-NYC tunnel makes absolute sense, the ridership wouldn't justify it unless more subway lines are built throughout the borough.

Because they will certainly block the expansion if they don't want it.

The City does what it wants if there's enough political muscle behind it. SI isn't exactly the city's crowning jewel (in fact, it's borough 5 out of 5 for all intents and purposes).
I don't think anything will happen because there's no need for city hall to expend political capital for a borough as useless as SI.

Wheres the political muscle to extend the N train to LGA? Instead of doing that, they're building an AirTrain to go *away* from the city to connect to an already overcrowded 7 train.
Why should there be? We're already the boro with the highest median income and highest percentage of home ownership. Why would we change that for a means of transportation that only attracts more rubbish?
I'm sure SI residents don't want a subway because it will make it easier to live there for poor people.
(I don't mean this as an anti SI/anti middle class comment)
