You can barely find 1200 dollar studios in the bronx anymore now that section 8 pays 1,550 for one bedroom and studios in NYC as of a few months ago. I'm in your same boat btw. It's looking more and more like Newark. NYC doesn't give a crap about people like us, just rich people and leeches.
Eh, you can find it, or close. Don't know about utilities, you are probably looking at heat+hot water there, not gas and electricity, to be clear. This one is near me, they say "trendy", but I would call it several blocks past the "trendy" area. For now. You can definitely find that in SI, maybe even a 1bdrm depending on the area. My boy is looking at a couple $1.2-1.3/mo 1bdrms there currently.
Deaver we are on the same boat. How's the commute on SI?
I'm not in SI anymore, but I have a couple kids who live there. One works in Queens mostly, he drives or SIRR to ferry to subway. It isn't horrible for him, but he is construction so he is up early and leaves mid-afternoon, misses a lot of traffic. The other boy works on SI, so... I did the SI commute for awhile a decade or so ago, and IMO it is pretty rough and wears you down over time. Up to the person though, my elder boy has been doing it for six years now without a complaint. Definitely give a few dry runs to see what you think before committing to a place there. You can certainly get more for your money.
Can you REALLY find studio / one bedrooms down there that at that price?
I would think you might be able to find a studio for $1200 in some places of Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Sheepshead Bay, Brighton Beach, Coney Island.
If you look in an apartment in a house, you will have an easier time finding one.
