No school has completely apolitical teaching. I certainly had teachers who taught us that the US was the greatest, most wonderful country in the world. Which went far beyond ABC's and 123s, but somehow I think you're okay with that.

It's really up to the kids to ultimately decide on whether or not they believe this stuff or how useful it is or will be.

And if you want the kids to be taught something different, put up the money and start your own charter school.

Don't me wrong, my statements shouldn't be mistaken for me saying that I'm excited about this venture. Sadly businessmen often fail when they decide to reform education. It's outside their realm of expertise. Still, if he's putting up the money, then of course he has the right to influence the curriculum.

Ok. Fair enough. But do those who have an extensive experience or background in education have a strong track record themselves?
I've heard that supposedly we spend more on education than most industrialized countries and yet lag far behind them in terms of success or skills. I'm thinking when it comes to the educational system, everyone's been pretty much clueless about improving it. Especially improving education in economically disadvantaged areas.

So, if anyone wants to give it a try I say let them go at it. I wish Combs all the best though I'm not really expecting much. But one can hope.

social justice is at the heart of the american narrative .... one of the earliest history narratives we hear is how then colonists felt the british empire's boot on their neck through the tea tax - taxation without representation. colonist organized and broke free of the crown - pretty sure the british history books reads this as a riot and anarchy (well we did still the tea and other goods ... and set british property a blaze). i can't imagine there's away to tell 400 years of American history without talking about social justice - if there's a school teaching american history this way - then we shouldn't want our kids in that school.

also ... spend some substantive time getting to know the african-american narrative 'the white-man as evil and all the blame for the communities' isn't a real view .... af-am history is our shared american history.
