I recently found a great apartment in the area. We toured during the day time and I liked the neighborhood. How is it? I'm a tall young woman and feel like I can defend myself, so I'm not really worried about my safety, but would like opinions on that too.

Anyone have any opinions? I felt safe personally, but just wondering about others opinions. Didn't seem to have many amenities like supermarkets or convenience stores like Rite Aid, but maybe I just didn't see them.

Do you know martial arts? (lethal weapon??) You should never let your guard down even if you believe you are wonder woman. You might want to rethink your statement of "I'm a tall young woman and feel like I can defend myself, so I'm not really worried about my safety."

East of Broadway is more wild than west of Broadway. I live on 179 st btwn Broadway n fort Washington and it's very quiet and people keep to themselves. I lived on 186-187 Audubon and that was a zoo in the summer-time. I also hated the people who would sit on the stoops or hang out by the entrance of apt buildings. A lot more drug activity and goons.

Also, if you are an average or above average lady you will get catcalled.

It's filled with noise during the summer time. If you have the patience to deal with loud music and lots of loitering, then proceed.

However, when renting in Washington Heights or Inwood, the rule of thumb is to do so in the *west side*.

Loud and lacking good stores, but reasonably safe enough and not too expensive.

Loud, but it's not really that lacking in good stores. There's enough mainstays in the immediate few blocks and then a lot more within a fifteen minute walk.

It's very lit. I wouldn't have the time or patience to rent in Washington Heights or Inwood right now

If you're comfortable being around loud Hispanics, its not too bad you just have to be careful and don't go out so late at night. Every place you go in west side of manhattan above 100th street is loud ghetto Hispanics especially in Inwood which is right above wash heights.
