A lot of media and Hollywood movies and shows take place in NYC. This sometimes leads to a false image of the city. I know a lot of people move in with one idea of what is like and end up surprised.
If you came to NYC from somewhere else, what were your biggest misconceptions? If you're a local, what do you believe are the biggest misconceptions about New York?
I think the biggest current misconception is that NYC, and particularly Brooklyn, is all one big hipster/millennial circle jerk . Most parts of city are nothing like that.
That it's expensive. It certainly is expensive but not as much as it's made out to be. Other than rent you can get most things for cheap. Very easy to live on a budget in NYC compared to other global cities. And you don't need a car, so there's another cost you don't have to worry about.
I find the city of skyscrapers, full of parties! Some or the Hollywood shows there, make it an ultra-modern city. I can say only this as I have been there a few times.

Yeah, while the rents are expensive, everything else can be found for a reasonable price.

That's misleading, you can't maintain the same standards as the burbs with the same money in NYC. There is competition for everything here so if you can't learn to live within your means and work the system and social networks, you are finished.
