That Manhattan is all there is to NYC. There are four other amazing boroughs that you can explore and have a great time in. I love my neighborhood (Astoria) and it's possible to live a fun, fufilling life outside of Manhattan. I was born and raised here and always associate Manhattan with going to work so when I have days off I try to stay off that island and enjoy my own neighborhood or friends' neighborhoods.

Really? There are other boroughs?
Kidding. Queens is great. I like Long Island City and Forest Hills. Astoria is cool too.
So true! I wanted to post this also but it slipped my mind.
That is absolutely the #1 misconception, NYC very much goes to sleep, almost everything closes except the subway and a handful of bars & clubs.
Good luck finding a store that's open at 2 am
Especially once you get out into the boroughs. The closest bodega on my old street in Brooklyn closed up for night around 10. The 24 hour one was a ways away.
I think the biggest misconception that TV always provides is that young and decent parts of NYC are for everyone.
You generally see characters in large airy 2 bedroom apartments (everyone's got that roommate) but they're working middle America jobs.
Few shows have characters working 50 hours a week to live in a 1 bedroom hellhole, recognizing it sucks and then leaving.
