Uber has been giving me promotions lately which is 50% of my next 10 rides until 10/23 which makes me choose them over Lyft right now.

I love how in the comments for the Times article people are saying Uber is out to destroy the Yellow Cab industry and after it does it's going to raise rates and we're screwed. Obvious taxi shills posting, there is decent competition right now already in the car app space, Uber / Lyft / Via. And actually Via is probably set to eventually dominate the landscape because of their ride sharing model which is extremely cheap. If you don't mind sharing a car it's better than the subway for close to the same price. And it's not like you're sharing with a urine soaked homeless guy, everybody using the service at a minimum has a credit card and smartphone which filters out almost all the riff raff. The competition will always bring prices down, unlike the fixed yellow cab pricing

The ride share companies have been keeping rates low to build volume. At some point their rates won't be sustainable if they can't keep drivers.

At some point it's all going to driverless cars. Probably within the next 2-5 years

That could be the reason since riding the subway can be a very unpleasant experience.

I visited NYC with a group last weekend. The techies walked right past the cab stand at Newark Penn and waited 5+ minutes for an uber car to show up. We were only going a mile and could have been there if we had just jumped in one of the yellow cabs waiting outside the station.

It's hilarious how there is a whole clique of people out there who now refuse to ride in a yellow cab or stay in a real hotel. They get burned by uber and airbnb but they keep going back for more.

It just culture lol At LGA it like million of cabs line up waiting for customers for pick up but no one take them. Everyone keep on looking at their phones when their uber is coming. Most people I see go in cabs are like old people or older tourists
