I lived on the edge of the south slope (14th and 7th ave vicinity) for several years with my husband (late 20s couple too). I didn't mind at all being on the edge. Nice to be near the movie theater and park and there are plenty of eateries etc on that end too. Park slope is a great area to be in when you are in the in-between stage of settling down before kids. Plenty of bars etc. Some good bookshops. Food coop. Lots of creative professional people. Of course it is baby central too so if you have kids you are set.
Hey, I used to live there as well. How is the Armory? That was a hot issue when I was there.
Anyway, as they said, its fine. Easy access to the park (get a bike- you can ride to the beach!!!!), choice of two F Train Stations and you are still in the Slope proper.
Where is a better bang for your buck?
I understand I can go to other areas that are cheaper but I really dont feel like being in an unsafe gritty area and worrying about my g-friend walking to the subway.
I read some of these posts on this site and some people make some really shady areas seem safe when everyone knows they are very suspect.
14th and PPW is a fine location. North Slope is by far the nicest, Central Slope is alright, and South Slope is not a very attractive area (very overrated in my opinion) but nonetheless safe. There are some beautiful blocks near the park in North and Central slope. As someone else has said, living in North Slope gives you access to a lot more trains than living more south does. Besides Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, and Carroll Gardens, Park Slope is head and shoulders above other neighborhoods in Brooklyn in terms of niceness. North/Central Slope near the park rivals nice park blocks in the UES and UWS. Parking should be pricey (especially close to the park like you are) but not to the insane level of Manhattan parking prices.
PRO:
1. Best neighborhood in New York, with shops, restaurants, etc!
2. Short distance to Manhattan via public trans
3. Prospect Park
4. Great schools
5. Great brownstones
CON:
1. Very high-priced
2. Overdevelopment/condo greed! (I've got stories!)
3. Parking
4. Friday night along 5th Avenue like that of LES; can get overbearing (also, see 4)!
5. Most apartments are very small
