This happened a couple of days ago. I couldn't find if someone had already posted about this. I am usually very sympathetic to the families of dead unarmed (usually black) people who get shot by the police but in this case, I think the police did the right thing.
This is what the suspect looked like before he was shot to death by police. They discovered only later that he wasn't holding a gun, but an object intended to look like a gun. Well, guess what! The suspect was successful in making the police think he had a gun. Good for him.
The family is now leading protests against the police. If this had been a real gun and the police had failed to protect the public, what then?
The issue is that he was mentally ill. Everyone in the neighborhood knew that he was odd but never violent. The police need better training on how to deal with/de-escalate mentally ill individuals.

How, pray tell, can you tell someone is a known mentally challenged individual when your only interaction with them is about two seconds as you roll up on the man and have to make a literal split second SHOOT/DON'T SHOOT Decision?
Should they have said "HEY HANG ON HANG ON! IS THAT A REAL GUN AND DO YOU HAVE ANY KNOWN MENTAL ISSUES WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?" as they got out of their police cars?
Why wasn't his family and friends who ALL KNEW he had issues, taking care of him and caring for him? Getting him help and keeping him off the street?
Of course it's the police's fault yet again because it makes the family $$$$$$ sadly.
Vassell had 23 prior arrests, including a 2003 assault for biting his ex-girlfriend's hand and punching her, a 2005 robbery, and a 1999 gang assault. Four other arrests involved gun charges. He had been issued 120 summonses and had a history of mental health interactions, including at least one contact with police where he was described as being emotionally disturbed.
I read the part about assualting his girlfriend. There is truly someone for everyone.
His death is on the family. Or maybe everyone with prior edp episodes should be made to wear an easily identifiable bracelet so cops can identify them on the scene. His family failed him.

I’m wondering how you would de-escalate this situation?

What? Never violent? I don't see how you can say that. Please read below.
