Washington Heights is safer than midtown, thats all you need to know. Noway even close to Brownsville. WH used to be dangerous like 20 years ago. Now its kinda noisy. lots of house parties, day and night. buy ear plugs.

I'm white and used to live in that area. Nothing to worry about in my opinion, especially being there during the day. Like someone else mentioned, it's just very loud with lots of street vendors and even the local businesses playing Spanish music. Neither train really makes a difference, but I will say that there's a bigger Jewish and white community coming from the side of the A Train from what I've seen. Much safer than Brownsville!!

You’ll be absolutely fine. Much safer than driving to a suburban office park on the expressway. Enjoy your time up there: it’s a fabulous part of town.

OP, the only difference really is that walking along 181st a bit after leaving the 1, as opposed to leaving the A at 175th, is that 181st will be busier during normal hours. More people on the streets, stores open, folks coming and going, etc. Yes, anything can happen anywhere, but neither route is particularly dangerous or fear-inducing, and if you have any street smarts at all -- which you should after living and working in Brooklyn -- you should be fine.
