I will be living in NYC, probably in the Murray Hill area and will be working in Pearl River. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could do the commute? I could have a car if that’s the best option. Thank you!
There is a train from Penn Station on one of the NJ transit lines that goes to Pearl River. But if you are working regular hours those trains may not run at the right times for a reverse commute. You'd have to check. There are also buses from Port Authority on 42nd and 8th that go to Pearl River. But again, you'd have to see if they run at the right times for a reverse commute.
Google puts the driving time in the morning rush at about an hour, but in bad weather it will likely be a lot longer. It's not a commute I would want to make five days a week. If you're driving you just might be better off living somewhere like Hoboken or Jersey City -- an easier drive to work and you can take the PATH into into the city when you want to be there.
I commute by car from Hell's Kitchen to Teterboro, NJ. The commute isn't bad unless there is an accident that backs up the GWB. I avoid the tunnels because there is still considerable traffic. Personally I'd recommend living on the west side because crossing midtown is absolute hell. I'm guessing you would take the FDR heading north? No experience with commuting on the east side.
