Sure, the shows are good. You should see one. But I don't know any shows that start at 1am. Most of the Broadway and nearby Off Broadway shows pretty much start at 7pm or 8am and go until 10pm or 11pm.
Times Square is a very, very overrated place, but if you've never been there then it's worth the visit once. The Broadway shows are the only reason I ever go there. Otherwise, really no reason for me personally. Depends on what you are used to city-wise and travel. If you are not from a very big place and haven't traveled much, then Times Square will be amazing. If you live in a walkable city already (say Chicago, SF, Boston, DC, etc) or have visited a lot of them around the world, it will be an interesting place for once or twice, but not worth going crazy for. Ultimately, it's just a bunch of people with a bunch of video billboards, and stores. Much different than it was 30 years ago too.

No I mean a show from the wacky people who walk around Times Square after 1am.

Before I moved here, I used to travel every week on business for over 2 years. For months at a time, I would stay near Times Square, and I don't know. There's really not a lot of characters. At least not how it used to be. There are drug dealers here and there at that hour still, but it can get pretty dead depending on the day of week. I've seen more wacky people downtown (East Village for example) than around Times Square these days at those times.
A guy dressed really nice wearing $159 apple headphones screamed and cursed me out for not giving him $1. I mean really you wish me dead because I don't give you $1.
Times square MCD is just as bad. Can't even walk in there without someone asking you for $.
LOL....should have seen it the 60s and 70s....knee deep in trash everywhere. X rated shows and the people that go with them all over the area. Street crime all over the area.

Dangerous? You may be too wimpy to live in NYC, if you consider someone yelling to be "dangerous." Look at crimes statistics from several decades past.
Don't confuse "dangerous" with "creepy" or "scary."
WoW! Talk about memories. Used to go to the Playland they showed towards the end with my younger brother on Saturdays. I don't remember feeling unsafe, although I think we knew it was gross on some level but since it didn't effect us, we didn't care. Yikes.
There weren't as many true psychotics on the street thirty years ago as there are today.
