I heard a lot of Asians (code for "chinese") are flocking to SI, aka the Rock, or the "forgotten boro of NYC". If you haven't noticed, wherever they move, they form and expand a "chinatown". So, where are they moving to on the rock? how big is the town by now?
I haven't been to SI for ages, but heard that an outlet just opened there. Is SI the next hot RE place to put money into? Please share what you know.
It's a limited move at best because SI has very limited stock near the good areas. There are empty lands but unless they build roads or add trains going there. It's a bad investment compare to NJ or Long Island where there are significant Chinese moving to.
Stapleton and the area near it on the train line has a lot of Chinese families as shown by the prevalence of winter melon vines on lawns in the late summer. I’ve seen the FJ style metal fences as well.
Nobody calls Staten Island the Rock and yes the Island is being invaded by a few large blocks of ethnic groups. Within 10 years there is going to be a massive swing in demographics.

I think “The Rock” is an old-school North Shore thing. My family hails from the South Shore going back over 100 years and no one ever says that but my buddy who’s family is North Shore just as far back does. I believe Bugsy, who always says it, also hails from a North Shore old-school family.

There has been a huge influx of Chinese families moving here but I don't think to any specific area. Where I live in New Dorp however there has steadily been Chinese food establishments opening up that aren't like the typical Americanized Chinese restaurants you find everywhere. They're authentic places like you'd find in Flushing and they're usually quite busy with Chinese people, where white baby-boomers still go to places like Jade Asian Restaurant with their Frank Sinatra cover bands and fried, sugary garbage food. Even the Excelsior Grand is going to become a Catering Hall/Dim Sum place. So if I think there were to be a Chinatown, I think New Dorp might be the closest we'll get. I also have a suspicion that when the Shop Rite moves to the new Hylan Plaza, the old location will probably become a Chinese supermarket.
