So what do people think should be done to lower the crime rates in NYC? Keep in mind if someone has already killed someone, then all the police can do is react.
What can be done not to react to crime, but to prevent it from happening in the first place? People should work for preventative measures.
I certainly would not want to be in a train with gunshots.
You can thank liberal/ "progressive" politicians who believe in releasing violent criminals into the streets, antagonize law enforcement, stopping stop and frisk, etc
I left in 2010. I had a CCP but lived through 70s, 80s, and 90s NYC and developed PTSD. It was time to go to a place where the chances of shooting someone, (getting indicted) or getting shot went way down. The chances of that happening diminished as time went by but the damage was done.

You may not know this living in sunny Spain, but overall crime rates in NYC have been trending downwards for years. It is just an uptick of problems caused by young hot heads of a certain demographic that is causing worry.
BdeB and liberal/progressive democrats swept into power promising to molly coddle thugs because previous tactics were "racist" or some such nonsense. Word has now obviously gotten out in said demographic they won't be touched, and if things do come to that they will be home (out of jail) before their dinner gets cold.
This will end way things always do; there will be a major incident with heavy loss of lives then either democrats/liberals will be forced to turn their backs on previous policies, or get voted out of office and replaced by more sensible people.
Because gun shots being fired in the subway are scary for everyone, except for you.
If NYC was as bad as some of you scream gunshots would be like a car backfiring. So often that no one would be scared.
It scares people because we are no longer accustomed to this. 20 years ago such an incident would have led to momentary panic, followed by a quick restoration to normality once people thought that the shooters had resolved their issues, fled the scene or were arrested by the cops.
I really don't think that a full stop and frisk of some one who was driving with his phone, is a good use of the cops' time. Several minutes to do the frisk, call in to see any outstanding warrants, waste more time trying to figure out and what grounds that this person should be arrested, so the stop didn't look bad. And despite this over 90% of the stops revealed nothing.
Communities know who the bad elements are, but if the cops waste time frisking church boys with bibles in their hands, the gang bangers continue to shoot at random.
Now of course if folks didn't have the ability to buy guns and bullets at the store when they were buying milk and bread, then we wouldn't have these problems. Large Canadian and UK cities have similar demographics and yet almost none of the gun violence that even NYC (one of the cities with the US cities with the lowest crime rate) has.
And yes 20 years ago Rudy was mayor, and yet this city was a good deal more dangerous than it now is. And all of those hipsters pushing their baby carriages on Bedford Ave are evidence of this. They were NOT there in 1995.
