Passing judgements without knowing the person, the usual suspects who write just to write something ( not you bugsy), not addressing what OP asked in the first place..not cool

Well said. High income individuals can amass a ton of savings. For individuals like myself who are fortunate to live with family and spend months/over a year saving, a health issue or auto accident can wash away most of any savings I have. I can empathize.

OP knows he is in over his head financially. He doesn't need people proverbially hitting him over the head with this fact. I can guarantee you that.

OP, I have no advice of which to speak but I can only offer you solidarity. Your main priority should be putting food in your belly and getting your medicine. Have you tried speaking with your local assemblyperson? Have you tried getting on unemployment? Even if you are not eligible for unemployment you should be eligible for PUA (Pandemic Unemployment Assistance) which is $600 a week. Additionally, I saw on ZipRecruiter that there are companies hiring remotely for customer service representatives for $12 an hour with the postings earmarked as "Urgent."

Best of luck to you.

Good advice and I agree with the bolded. My experience with them is that everyone else is lazy and haven't worked hard enough. We are in the situation we are in because we didn't work hard like they did and didn't go through what they did. We have it "easy." And then they have the nerve to still be working when their a** should be retired. "Get a job?" How about you retire so that we can have an easier time/getting promotions.

I hope you can qualify for some unemployment, soon. And find a food bank.

If you cannot pay your rent, just don’t pay it. You CANNOT be evicted because of the virus. Feed yourself and get your meds.

He called me a few times and actually asked me if I got my stimulus check. I'm scared, I don't know how long this is going on for and while rent is a priority food and my medication comes before that. He wasn't mean or anything, and I do get he's hurting too...it's a situation that sucks for everyone. I hope the city has a plan to help both tenants AND landlords.

But I fear this is going to get ugly, what little money I have I need to hold on to, no one really knows how long this is going to last. The guy who's name the apartment is under lives in NJ and his brother a few doors down, who I usually give the rent to. In the past 3 weeks the only purchases I have made are for food, my meds, gloves and face masks. I'm trying to figure out how to tell him that I need to hold on to what little I have to get the things my life and health depend on and I don't know how, again I'm scared. I know I can not get evicted but prior to this I had an excellent tenant/landlord relationship as I was never late with my rent and I'm very clean. I'm sorry if this is all over the place, it's just hard to concentrate. I have also been looking for work and no one is hiring, not my local supermarket, not the nearest dollar tree, anyone. I have been doing photoshop work to make a little money but again, it's going to food, medication. Since Spectrum is giving people 60 days I have not even paid my cable bill. Again the biggest thing is how to handle this guy, especially if it gets ugly which I fear it's going to. If anyone has any advice I'd be very grateful. I hope everyone here and their loved ones are safe and stay that way! Thx again
This epitomizes what I expect will be a major problem - allowing landlords to be just as greedy as if it were a boom economy.

I don't have any solutions, but see if you can find any tenant-advice organizations or ask your city council person. And ask your doctor if you can get any temporary help with the medication costs. And keep gently reminding your landlord of your excellent track record.

Best of luck.

You don't have to spend your cash on food. You can qualify for SNAP/food benefits. Due to COVID-19, you should quality for emergency benefits. You need to go to their office nearest you ASAP. Use your cash to at least pay a one week every 2-3 weeks. Your landlord is right to inquire about your stimulus check because a portion of that can be used to pay on your rent arrears. Paying something is better than nothing at all.

I'll have you to know that there are more people than we realize who are in the same shape. Not all are OH & PA transplants or from other places. Some are born and raised in NYC but for mental health reasons, escaping family or relationship toxicity, or too many people in the family home, they leave those homes and rent a room from a stranger. The average job doesn't pay well enough to afford NYC. However, the biggest issue is that the city and state allowed rent to go up in NYC without and a cap or ceiling in the first place. Rental market is totally unregulated.
