What's the point if the restuarants, bars, cultural activites are closed, no jobs, and crime everywhere?
Yah its not like NYC is a pretty city to see. Almost no history or culture left, the city is trashed, and homeless and junkies on every street corner (at least in my area). And I say this as a person who loves NYC more then most people...
Yes this city is about change and has been evolving since the day it was discovered. But right now NYC has been put on a time on. And from the looks of it it will be placed on a time out for a while. Its parents aren't following the proper time out rules and sadly poor NYC will suffer.
Huh. There are certainly some positives to NYC being less crowded. Cheaper rents, seats on the subway, open parking spots... It's too bad NYC isn't really built to be a low-density city. It feels nicer to live in it like this, but if it goes on for much longer, our economy might collapse like a house of cards.
When many of the Bros, Bro-Hoes, transplants, upper middle to wealthy flee this city for various reasons plenty of spent coin is going with them...
All of a sudden everything certain suspects hold near and dear won't have anyone to pay for them (as in taxes/revenue generated), then you're going to see fights like dogs over a bone.
BdeB and Il Duce for that matter haven't even begun to cut city and state budgets as they should in face of fiscal calamity. One or both are saying Hail Mary's and hoping Congress in a few weeks or after "president" Joe Biden takes office shovels out money NYC's way; good luck with that.
Raise taxes? Fugetaboutit! People are already fleeing after SALT tax deduction was lowered. Raise taxes more and whoever is left will pack up and move as well.
I think it will draw people too. The longer term concerns are the political climate becoming more and more hostile to business/economic growth and if the QOL can be maintained.
That is the much bigger long-term problem for NYC. The outlook is not good. All the dems seeking the mayoralty are versions of deBlasio.

Many of these people are moving to Westchester and LI, of course the ones going to CT and NJ is $$ the state is loosing forever. NYC tax base is going to be eroded. This is just an accelerated version of the natural cycle. Cities are now becoming less "cool" and people are going to the burbs. In 10 years cities will be cool again and will see a inward migration again.
