I've never been to Roosevelt Island. Know people who live there but have never been there myself oddly enough. All I remember is once that ferry getting stuck full of people midway. It remained stuck overnight and they finally had to let them out via ladder.

“Forget everything you think you know about Roosevelt Island,” said Kaja Meade, who moved her family from Manhattan to the spit of land in the East River in 2012.

The slender, two-mile long expanse tucked between the Upper East Side and Astoria, Queens, is a somewhat obscure neighborhood whose appeal — and sheer existence — leaves some New Yorkers baffled.

I've been there several times. Did a race around the Island so I can say I seen it all . What I don't understand is how there is no walking bridge from Roosevelt Island to Manhattan. I'd feel trapped living there.

Do not believe this RE hype job. No part of NYC RE is booming currently. Any place in NYC that isn't experiencing the free fall of Manhattan RE is now considered "booming".

I don't remember if they have a boat launch or ferry access.

There is also a bridge for vehicles between Roosevelt Island and Long Island City/Queens.

One can walk across that bridge too although the only thing on the other side of use is a Costco.

I took a field trip there this summer, it is a pretty manicured place north of the bridge. The Cornell tech campus is very sleek and shiny, I noticed there was a casual eatery there that a lot of people were at, perhaps because there aren't many options there. Enjoyed walking around Four Freedoms/FDR Park too.

Yeah but that bridge is only good for people going to Queens. If you are in Manhattan and want to take a cab home you have to go all the way to Queens and then turn and go to Roosevelt island. Freaking pain in the ass.

Roosevelt's market rate housing is awesome. Many apartments are very spacious and have gorgeous views to the city.

On the other hand, the island reminds me of that zombie movie, "I am Legend" with Will Smith. If the bridges and cable car were to be demolished, it would be difficult to get out. Kind of scary if you ask me, although the same would apply in Manhattan lol
