Hours after attending the funeral of an NYPD officer run down by an alleged drunk driver — and Transportation Alternatives urging a city to help stem a surge in traffic fatalities, Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday announced his support of a state bill – the Crash Victims Rights and Safety Act.

Following the funeral of NYPD Officer Anastasios Tsakos’ funeral in Long Island, the mayor said the public should be entitled to timely traffic report data, the city should have the right to lower speed limits to 15 at their discretion, the blood alcohol concentration limit for driving lowered from .08% to .05% and the abolishment of the requirement for two reckless acts to convict a driver of criminal negligence.

The act would also allow the city to operate speed cameras 24/7, according to the mayor.

Dwi laws don’t work. Punishing people instead of rehabbing them is not the right way, but it’s the American way.

A mass killer can come here illegally and get a license, with zero regard to their past history of driving. Real passport or not. Yet for those who are here, DMV just takes away the license. That doesn’t stop people from driving and living. It never will. There a lots of people driving with revoked license because life goes on. Most of them never hurt anyone.

This is why that silly woman was driving with a suspended license, still drunk. We need to fix people, behavior and outlook on life enforce we give back licenses.

Yea, it might make sense to take away the vehicles in addition to suspending the license.

That doesn’t solve the problem. You can still buy a car, put plates from another state or temp plates and drive. Plenty more illegal ways of getting it done. You can do all that and drive drunk every day for the rest of your life and never get pulled over.

That doesn’t solve the problem.

Not completely, but it's a pretty severe punishment so if you believe in punishment as being useful, then this is pretty punishing monetarily (even with a beater, because if you were driving a beater, then you likely didn't have that much money to begin with) and in terms of inconvenience. I guess if it's thought of as too severe a monetary punishment, then maybe there can be a difference made on the value of traffic fines and the value of the vehicle and if the value of the vehicle is higher, you get monthly metrocards up to the value which would be hilarious for a six or seven figure value vehicle. 60+ years of a monthly metrocard sent to your address each month. Just totally awesome.

It's a lot more punishment than a suspended license, that's for sure.

What a waste. Dude gave his life for a city that hates him, and he won't be the last.

Rest in peace.

Totally needless death. But standing on the highway in the middle of the night was not the smartest move either.

Can believe the punishment is only 15 years max. How?

This bill will do nothing unless this part means something different:

The bill would also require the state Department of Transportation and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles to create a rating system for vehicles in terms of the threat they pose to cyclists and pedestrians, create a legal definition for what constitutes a safe distance for cars to pass cyclists and it would require the DMV create a pre-licensing course for new drivers.

Does the bolded part mean they will create a score for each individual driver in terms of their riskiness, like a credit score? Pair this with some big brother tech like cameras everywhere and face recognition technology is the only way to prevent accidents like this. I highly doubt any of this will happen.

This is just a grab for money via more speeding tickets via lowered speed limits.

How to solve this problem

2 DUIs and you are permanently barred from having a driver's license. Significant financial fines for violations for driving after license is revoked.

Financial compensation required to be paid to victims of DUI drivers by driver.

People alter their behavior quickly when you hit them in the pocket.
