End of August will bring expiration of federal enhanced UI benefits, and NYS's eviction moratorium. People are waking up to that bit of news, and as it sinks in so may panic.
While federal eviction ban put in place until early October by Biden may give some protection (assuming it's not struck down by SCOTUS), neither former governor Cuomo nor his recent replacement has moved on extending UI benefits. That means next week will be last of any of the free money that has been flowing for nearly two years. Those on UI will just get their regular checks, no extra $300. Self-employed, gig workers, independent contractors go back to not being qualified to file UI, thus won't get anything.
That's least of it. We have printed ourselves into an inflationary nightmare. Once that inflationary spike happens, there will be a deflationary crash before massive hyperinflation. 50 years of bad fiscal policy, rampant spending, endless entitlements, and more is coming to a head.
I read somewhere that 89% of the federal funds allocated for rent assistance have not been distributed nationwide. That number is patently absurd.
If anyone reading this board is struggling financially or needs social services programs I highly recommend using the website findhelp.org. You put your zip code in and it gives you a list of all the resources around you that can help you with things like housing, transit, food, etc.
I'm sure certain politicians would like it. But I'd bet that she'd going to use the delta variant (and subsequent dangerous variants) as an excuse to continue extending. I don't see the extensions lasting forever, but until the Supreme Court comes in and stops these unconstitutional takings, I think we are in for a long ride. Unfortunately.
How many people do we think are actually squatting? Everyone I know is paying rent as always. Maybe it’s more of a thing in low income neighborhoods? Do we have any numbers?

That said, from what I gather, you still have a lot of people who are behind on rent, even if they have generally started to pay again. And then you still have those who aren't paying rent today. Taken together--and regardless of the reasons why people are behind or not paying rent today--those affected LLs are upset that their constitutional right to enforce their contracts are being infringed.
They're sending everyone with kids $300/mo as a " child tax credit". So singles are the only ones SOL.
