Hello, I am planning to move to New York from outside the US Hong Kong around August this year and am looking to rent in Brooklyn. Access to a great public elementary school is my most important criteria. I am single mother with a 3 year old daughter and would prefer family oriented areas. I am not sure of the neighborhood to choose and what kind of rent I am looking at. Any advice on schools and neighborhoods is sincerely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It depends. I’m assuming you’re looking for a two bedroom. What’s your price range?
you'll probably like bensonhurst. the neighborhood has a lot of chinese businesses and very good access to the subway. also rent in southern brooklyn is pretty affordable.

I don't know anything about schools in Brooklyn, but here's a resource that might help. https://insideschools.org/
Some of the best public schools in Brooklyn are in the Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill and Carroll Gardens neighborhoods. I live in Carroll Gardens and my neighbor is a physician who moved here just to put his 5 year old son in the local public elementary school, up the street.
This part of Brooklyn has a lot of the housing that would be considered as "classic brownstone" Brooklyn.
But depending on your budget, rents are super high in this part of Brooklyn. Primarly due to the fast access to subways and pretty much anything in downtown Brooklyn and lower to midtown Manhattan (3-15ish minutes), family oriented, good restaurants, shopping, and bars. And also the quiet, "tucked away" small village vibe of these neighborhoods in these parts of Brooklyn.
Other areas I'd recommend are Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights.
But you'll pay roughly $3-5000+ per month, for a 2 bedroom apartment (unless you find an incredible deal), and roughly $2 or 3 grand higher for a 3 bed, depending.

South Brooklyn would be my vote. Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn Heights, etc. will be $$$. However, both have good elementary schools; you would just be further from the city in South Brooklyn.

Forget Brooklyn. There are no good school districts. Even the "good" ones bring in bad students from other neighborhoods to disrupt serious students. In America, we all this "bussing." White liberals think making bad black/hispanic students sit with white/asian students will make them become better students. It has never worked. Never will. Education starts at home.
If you are Asian, it would seem logical to me you look at a neighborhood in NorthEast Queens which consists of large Chinese/Korean populations such as Flushing, Fresh Meadows, Bayside, Whitestone, Douglaston. And they are in the BEST district in all of NYC.
