Hello,

As a veteran straphanger, I have observed the subways to be a lot dirtier and more treacherous as of the last year especially. More gangs/groups up to no good, more drunk and disorderly (Had a guy try to give me hug, drunk as all hell) and more fights esp between youths. Went from a few incidents here and there to several a week, based on my observations as of recently. And im talking about as early as 8-9 PM.

Anyone else feel on their guard a lot more as of late? I especially cringe when people pull out their LAPTOPS on the subway. Too risky and not a sound choice.

Your thoughts fellow NY's?

Crime and grime ebb and flow on the trains... I dont lower my guard, one person or a dozen, crime can happen anytime, anywhere, on any stop.

Is it worse now, maybe, but who can tell - I know they cut a lot of the train custodians, so it prob is dirtier on trains and in stations as of late. More fights, maybe - a lot more people are out of work, so they have something to fight about. More youth violence, maybe - kids dont get the attention at home like they used to - no one tells them how to act in public.

So maybe its a lot worse, or maybe you're just noticing it more. Either way, you are the one most responsible for your own safety. As a wise man once said, "protect your neck."

I am more observant for sure, but I have never felt the need to be more alert for situations then I have as of recently. A lot is just exercising common sense to be safe...But that feeling...So different for me now.

Definitely agree to the dirtier part... rats have been all over the subways lately... I mean I've always seen them but not at the level i've been seeing them recently... As far as the crime, I have been noticing it the last 2-3 weeks or so but I know we'll have the naysayers on here that no matter what will say the city's perfectly fine and since I don't want to start any problems I'll just agree that NYC is awesome and there's nothing wrong with it... =)

there's a video of one rat actually walking along a bum in the train while he was sleeping and he panicked and the rat jumped off... you tend to see them when the train is not as packed but trust me they are on the train... thing is some trains are cleaner than others... I see it on the E train the most and sometimes on the L though the L has overall become much cleaner...

I saw that video. Awful. the riders contribute greatly..How many Mickey D's and Styrofoam food containers do you see esp on the Sat and Sun nights? it's like a buffet car for them. Ugh!
