This is a complex issue with no easy answers. One of the points this article addresses is the mandatory reporting (victims have to make a report within a week) and mandatory arrests which is something victims of domestic violence are loathe to do because they are financially dependent on their abusers. sigh. It is a dilemma with some saying the current funding of NYPD overtime & prison costs should be diverted to housing, childcare, mental health and transportation.

I don't wish to be flippant. I know there are various complex psychological, socio/economic issues regarding domestic violence but it's best not to have a relationship and children (who I truly feel sorry for; they didn't ask to be brought into this situation) with arseholes as much as it depends on you in the first place. I know. I know. Easier said than done.

I still think the NYPD is needed. I know it's not a perfect situation but I don't think it's wise to put them totally out of the equation.

“I believe they have a role regarding victims’ safety,” Kluger said in an interview after the hearing, speaking of the NYPD. “There are situations where the police need to respond and intervene. Because as far as I’m concerned, victims’ safety is paramount.”

Tiffany Cabán and Mercedes Narcisse plunge NYC’s legislature into a fierce debate dividing domestic violence advocates about the role of law enforcement in getting help for survivors.
